Wegovy is a prescription weight loss injection pen for overweight adults or adults with obesity. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which mimics a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone helps to regulate your blood sugar levels and also sends signals to receptors in your brain that manage your appetite, allowing you to feel fuller for longer.

Wegovy is prescribed to be taken just once a week alongside a diet and exercise plan to help you lose weight. Taken as prescribed, it can help you lose on average 21%* of your starting weight.

Who can use Wegovy Injection?

To be eligible for Wegovy, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over 27 and a weight-related medical condition or risk factor, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or type 2 diabetes.

And you can continue using Wegovy once your BMI is healthy if it was over 30 when you started using it. A weekly dose can help you maintain your weight loss even after you’ve reached your target weight.

Using Wegovy is simple. It comes as pre-filled pens you inject just under your skin. Always follow your clinician’s advice on how to use it.

• Inject Wegovy once a week, on the same day of the week. Set a reminder on your calendar or use an alarm to help you remember to use it.
• Each Wegovy pen contains four doses.
• Wegovy pens need to be kept at a temperature of 2°C to 8°C before use. You can keep them in your normal fridge at home.
• You can use Wegovy at any time of day, with or without meals. Take it on the same day each week, and try to use it at around the same time on this day.
• Before you use your pen, give it a mini inspection. If the liquid you can see through the window is clear, colorless, and smooth, it’s ready to inject.
• Pick the area you want to inject. Your options are your upper legs (front of your thighs), your stomach, or your upper arm. Avoid areas with irritated or broken skin, and don’t inject too close to your navel. You can change your injection site every week if you want to, but don’t use the same spot as your last injection.
• Take the cap off the Wegovy pen and twist a new needle onto the end.
• To do this, remove the paper tab and push the needle straight onto the pen. Turn it until it’s tight.
• Remove the outer cap and leave it to one side (you’ll need it again later).
• Then take off the inner cap and discard it.
• If it’s your first time using the pen, check the flow by turning the dose selector to the flow check symbol. Then, while holding the pen upright, press and hold the dose counter until it returns to 0. A drop should appear at the needle tip. If it doesn’t, try again. If a drop won’t appear, even with a new needle, don’t use the pen. If your pen passes the flow check, it’s ready to use.
• Set your dose by turning the dose selector until it shows your prescribed dose, then insert the needle into your skin.
• Press and hold down the dose button until it shows 0. Keeping the needle in your skin, slowly count to 6. You might feel or hear a click during this.
• You can then remove the pen from your skin.
• To remove the needle from the pen, rest the outer cap on a flat surface and guide the needle into it, taking care not to touch the cap or the needle. Once the needle is covered, push the outer cap completely on.
• Unscrew the needle and dispose of it as instructed by your clinician or local authorities.
• Once opened, it’s safe to store your pen at a ‘room temperature’ of up to 30°C for 6 weeks, or in a fridge between 2 and 8°C (away from any cooling elements). However, the best thing to do is to keep it in the fridge (in case your room temperature happens to climb above 30°C).
• After each time you inject when administering the first, second, and third doses of your pen, make sure to store your Wegovy pen in the fridge. Before you inject your next dose, you might find it more comfortable to remove your Wegovy pen from the fridge 30 minutes beforehand to allow it to reach room temperature.
• After you’ve injected the fourth and final dose of your current Wegovy pen, dispose of it as directed.
