Nevolat is a self-injectable weight loss medication manufactured by Zentiva. It contains the active ingredient liraglutide (Saxenda), which helps you feel fuller for longer and reduces your appetite, helping you reach your weight loss goals. It is licensed and approved for weight loss in the UK and is available on prescription.
It comes in a pre-filled pen that you inject once a day according to a dose escalation plan. This means that you’ll start with a low dose (0.6 mg) in the first week and then gradually increase it by 0.6 mg every week until you reach the final (maintenance) dose of 3 mg by week five.
Nevolat has been approved for weight management in people with a BMI (your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters) of at least 30, or at least 27 if you have health issues like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure.
It works best when used as part of a more complex weight loss program that includes physical activity and a balanced, calorie-restricted diet.
How does Nevolat work?
Nevolat contains liraglutide, which is a type of medication called a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The same ingredient is also used in other medications that help to manage type 2 diabetes.
Liraglutide works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which results in a series of effects in your body:
- Increased insulin secretion: This allows your muscles and liver to use glucose (a type of sugar) more effectively. It also leads to better blood sugar control, which can reduce cravings (especially for sweets and carbs) and help treat diabetes.
- Delayed gastric emptying: It reduces your stomach contractions and slows down the movement of food from your stomach to your gut. This increases feelings of fullness and decreases your food intake.
- Decreased appetite: It also activates key brain circuits to help you feel full after eating less and reduces hunger and cravings for sweet, fatty, or savory foods.
- Improved heart function: By binding to and activating the GLP-1 receptors in your heart cells and blood vessels, liraglutide promotes better heart function and lowers your blood pressure.[3]
- Weight loss: All of these effects work together to produce real results. In a clinical trial involving 3731 people, the patients in the liraglutide group lost on average 8.4 kg (18 lb 8 oz) over 56 weeks, while those in the placebo group lost a mean of 2.8 kg (6 lb 2 oz).
Liraglutide has also been shown to have neuroprotective (protecting the brain from damage or injury) effects, which can make it useful for treating Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.[5]
